Hong Kong Aikido Association (HKAA)

The Hong Kong Aikido Association was established with the aim of promoting the martial art of Aikido in Hong Kong. It is registered as a non-profit organisation served by voluntary staff and instructors. It was founded by Mr. Kenneth Cottier in 1971 who started a Aikido dojo in Homantin Street, Kowloon. Mr.Cottier has since returned to his home country but continues to visit Hong Kong every year to teach and promote Aikido in Hong Kong and Asia. The Hong Kong Aikido Association Limited is directly affiliated to the Aikikai, Aikido World Headquarter in Tokyo, Japan and is a member of the International Aikido Federation and the Asian Aikido Federation. The Association has represented Hong Kong in the Aikido Demonstration in the 6th World Games held in Akita, Japan in 2001.

Due to its non-aggressive nature, Aikido was adopted by the Royal Hong Kong Police, the Correctional Services Department and the Royal Hong Kong Regiment (The Volunteers) before 1997 as a system of arrest and control and personal self-defence. Aikido has ben adopted by some Government Departments in their Self Defence Training Curriculum. Aikido has also been adopted by many Police and security forces all over the world in their training programmes.

Subject to availability of training venues, the Hong Kong Aikido Association offers training seven days a week (except on public holidays) at government sporting facilities on both Hong Kong and Kowloon sides.
